K-POP VS. THE UNDEAD: PART 10 - FROZEN FREQUENCIES

PROLOGUE: FIVE PROBLEMS, ONE COMEBACK

The comeback showcase for "CONVERGENCE" was in two weeks, and AETHER's schedule was, as usual, completely impossible.

Jisoo stood at the living room whiteboard, markers in different colors, trying to make sense of their commitments. Luna sat with her laptop, cross-referencing dates. The others watched with growing concern.

"Okay," Jisoo said. "Let's review. We have:"

RED (URGENT):

  • Comeback showcase: 2 weeks
  • Music show promotions: 3 weeks starting after showcase
  • Fan meeting: 4 weeks out

BLUE (SUPERNATURAL - CONTRACTUAL):

  • Integration Initiative quarterly meeting: 3 weeks (mandatory for ambassadors)
  • Security training with Marcus's pack: ongoing
  • Diplomatic protocol training: twice weekly (Alistair's insistence)

GREEN (SUPERNATURAL - REQUESTS):

  • Arctic situation (Kira's message: "URGENT, ICE DEMONS, PLEASE HELP")
  • Dragon clan request from the Himalayas (Lady Vermillion forwarding)
  • Prince Silvius's "cryptic invitation" (actual text: "Come to the Fae Court. Bring snacks. Something interesting is happening. Probably dangerous. Definitely entertaining.")
  • Glitch Witches' Antarctica anomaly (Luna's been getting encrypted messages)
  • Ember's surface visit (6 months out, but requires planning)

Mr. Park was in the corner, no longer stress-eating. He'd evolved beyond stress-eating. He was now in what Dr. Schrödinger called "acceptance phase"—the point where the stress is so constant that you just... exist with it.

"We can't do all of this," he said calmly. Too calmly. "It's physically impossible. Even with supernatural help."

"What if we combine them?" Luna suggested.

Everyone turned to look at her.

"Hear me out," she continued, pulling up a map on her laptop. "Look at the locations. The Arctic situation—wherever that is, probably Svalbard or Greenland based on Kira's usual territory. The Antarctica anomaly—obviously Antarctica. The Fae Court—Prince Silvius mentioned it's in Iceland this season."

"Those are three different continents," Bella pointed out.

"But they're all COLD. Ice-themed. Which fits our 'CONVERGENCE' concept perfectly—we did fire, now we do ice. What if we do a polar tour? Hit all three locations, film content for the comeback, handle supernatural situations, and call it 'artistic research for the concept'?"

Jisoo stared at the map. "That's... actually brilliant."

"It's insane," Mr. Park said. "But no more insane than anything else we do. I'll call it the 'Polar Expression Tour' for the company. Educational. Environmental. Very on-brand."

"What about the dragon clan request?" Sori asked.

Alistair, who'd been reading the formal letter from Lady Vermillion, looked up. "That one's interesting. It's not urgent—they're requesting AETHER's presence for a 'Conclave of Ancient Clans' in six months. Timing-wise, it coincides with..."

"Ember's surface visit," Mia realized. "We promised to show her snow. The Himalayas have snow."

"So we schedule that for six months out," Jisoo said, adding it to the whiteboard. "Which gives us the polar tour NOW, comeback promotions, then the Himalayan situation later."

"What about Silvius's invitation?" Bella asked. "He said 'probably dangerous.'"

"With Silvius, everything is probably dangerous," Alistair said. "But he's also been a reliable ally. If he's asking us to come to the Fae Court, there's a reason. We should go."

"So the route is..." Luna traced on her map, "Seoul to Iceland (Fae Court), Iceland to Svalbard/Greenland (Arctic situation), then down to Antarctica (anomaly investigation). We film content at each location, handle supernatural business, get back for comeback promotions."

"How long?" Jisoo asked.

"Two weeks if we're efficient. One week if we're reckless."

"We're always reckless," Sori pointed out. "One week it is."

Mr. Park updated his stress ball collection to include a new one labeled "POLAR TOUR."

Alistair made calls. Many calls.

Within six hours, he had:

  • Secured transport (BERNARD, upgraded with cold-weather systems)
  • Arranged accommodations (various supernatural safe houses)
  • Coordinated with local supernatural authorities
  • Obtained permits (both human and supernatural)
  • Scheduled meetings with Kira, Silvius, and the Glitch Witches
  • Updated insurance (Mr. Park cried when he saw the premium)

"How do you do this?" Luna asked, watching him work through his contact list.

"Nine hundred and forty-seven years of networking," Alistair said, texting someone in what appeared to be Old Norse. "You meet a lot of people. And if you're polite and remember birthdays, they tend to help when you need to organize an impossible polar expedition on one week's notice."

"Who are you texting in Old Norse?"

"A frost giant. Lovely fellow. Owns a resort in Svalbard. Owes me a favor from 1743."

"Of course he does."

BERNARD was excited about the polar modifications.

"COLD-WEATHER SYSTEMS!" his voice boomed through the warehouse where Dr. Schrödinger was working. "I've been heat-resistant and water-resistant! Now I'll be COLD-resistant! I'll be omni-environmental!"

"You'll be a very versatile pink bunny," Dr. Schrödinger said, welding something that shouldn't be possible. "Now hold still while I install the ice-breaker attachments."

"Ice-breaker attachments?"

"In case we need to drive through frozen ocean. Or glaciers. Or ice walls. You never know."

"I'm becoming an arctic assault vehicle. The MOTHER fragments are conflicted—several are excited, several are concerned, and three are writing poetry about the juxtaposition of warmth and cold."

"AI poetry. That's new."

"We're very creative when properly motivated. Would you like to hear the haiku about thermal dynamics?"

"Maybe later."

The modifications were extensive:

ARCTIC-BUNNY CONFIGURATION:

  • Thermal insulation (interior stays warm regardless of exterior)
  • Heated exterior surfaces (prevents ice accumulation)
  • Ice-breaker prow (for frozen terrain)
  • Enhanced traction (for snow and ice)
  • Survival supplies (cold-weather gear, emergency heating)
  • Aurora-themed LED lighting (because aesthetics matter)
  • Color scheme: Pink with white and blue accents (winter wonderland theme)

"You look like a Christmas decoration," Bella observed.

"I look FESTIVE," BERNARD corrected. "The MOTHER fragments voted 15-2 in favor of the holiday theme. It's cheerful!"

The team briefing happened the night before departure.

Alistair stood at the front with a holographic display showing their route and known challenges.

"First stop: Iceland. The Fae Court is convening for their seasonal gathering. Prince Silvius specifically requested AETHER's presence, which means one of three things: he needs entertainment, he needs mediators, or something catastrophically weird is happening and he thinks we'll find it amusing."

"All three?" Sori suggested.

"Probably all three. The Fae are... unpredictable. Rules of Fae Court etiquette—do NOT accept any food or drink unless Silvius explicitly says it's safe. Do NOT make deals without reading the fine print in three languages. Do NOT compliment anything directly or they'll give it to you and expect something of equal value in return."

"This sounds exhausting," Luna said.

"It is. But Silvius is an ally, and the Fae have significant political influence. Making a good impression matters."

He pulled up the next location: Svalbard, Norway.

"Second stop: The Arctic. Kira's message mentioned 'ice demons,' which could mean several things—actual demons, ice elementals gone hostile, or frozen undead. We won't know until we arrive. What we DO know is that Kira rarely asks for help, so if she's asking, it's serious."

"Combat situation?" Marcus asked. His pack had been assembled for the mission, six werewolves in cold-weather tactical gear.

"Likely. Pack accordingly. Dr. Schrödinger is preparing cold-weather combat equipment."

"I've created thermal grenades," Greta said cheerfully. "They generate localized heat bursts. Very effective against ice-based entities. Only minor risk of starting fires in arctic conditions."

"MINOR risk?" Mr. Park squeaked.

"Extremely minor. Probably."

"There's that word again."

Alistair continued: "Third stop: Antarctica. The Glitch Witches have detected an anomaly—something magical and technological simultaneously, buried under two miles of ice. They think it might be connected to Dr. Xenon's escaped patron."

The mood in the room shifted. The mystery antagonist—the one backing Xenon, the one who kept helping him escape—was still out there.

"Do we know anything about this patron?" Jisoo asked.

"Only speculation," Alistair said. "Someone with access to ancient magic, cutting-edge technology, significant resources, and knowledge of supernatural politics. The list of entities fitting that description is... concerningly long."

"So we're going to Antarctica to investigate," Luna said. "With the Glitch Witches."

"Hex specifically requested you," Alistair said, and Luna tried very hard not to blush.

"LUNA HAS A DATE," Bella stage-whispered.

"It's a RESEARCH MISSION—"

"A research DATE—"

"FOCUS," Jisoo interrupted, but she was smiling. "Anything else we should know?"

"Yes. The cold. Specifically, magical cold is different from regular cold. It bypasses normal protection, affects supernatural beings differently, and can cause hypothermia in minutes. We're packing excessive amounts of heat sources, and Dr. Schrödinger has created 'thermal anchors'—devices that maintain a pocket of warmth around the wearer."

He held up what looked like a fancy brooch.

"Wear these at all times in extreme cold. They'll keep you alive if everything else fails."

"Comforting," Sori muttered.

"One more thing," Alistair said. "Mia."

Everyone looked at the maknae.

"Your voice has been... evolving. The singing pearls, the fire sprite, the harmonic abilities—you're becoming something unprecedented. A human who can affect reality through pure sound."

"Is that bad?" Mia asked quietly.

"It's powerful. Which means you're valuable. Which means you're a target. We've added extra security specifically for you."

A figure stepped out of the shadows—a woman with silver-white hair and frost literally crystallizing on her shoulders.

"This is Skadi," Alistair said. "Frost giant, former Valkyrie, current head of supernatural VIP protection. She's been assigned as Mia's personal guard."

Skadi bowed, ice cracking and reforming with the movement. "Your voice touched the fire elementals and the mer-people. I wish to see if it can touch the frozen places as well. Also, I am contractually obligated to prevent your death."

"That's... nice?" Mia said. "Thank you?"

"You're welcome, small singing human. I will break anyone who tries to harm you."

"She's very direct," Alistair said. "Frost giants are like that. Consider her your very intimidating bodyguard."

That night, AETHER couldn't sleep.

They gathered in the living room around 2 AM, drawn by shared insomnia and nervous energy.

"Polar expedition in one week," Bella said. "This is really happening."

"We've done underwater. We've done volcanic. Ice seems like the logical next step," Luna said.

"Except ice can kill you just as easily as fire," Sori pointed out. "Just slower. And quieter."

"Very encouraging."

Mia was playing with her fire sprite pendant. The tiny elemental was awake, flickering gently. "Cold is coming," it whispered in its crackling voice. "We'll keep you warm. We promise."

"I know you will," Mia said softly.

Jisoo looked at her team—her family. "Are we crazy for doing this?"

"Completely," they said in unison.

"But we're doing it anyway?"

"Obviously."

"Okay then." She raised an imaginary glass. "To AETHER. The only K-pop group stupid enough to tour the polar regions for 'artistic research.'"

"To being too dumb to quit," Bella added.

"To having diplomatic immunity that covers international incidents," Luna said.

"To Mr. Park's ever-expanding stress ball collection," Sori contributed.

"To keeping each other safe," Mia finished. "No matter how cold it gets."

They clinked their imaginary glasses together.

Outside, Seoul was sleeping.

But AETHER was wide awake, planning an impossible journey to impossible places, to handle impossible situations.

Because that was their job now.

Ambassadors. Performers. Heroes.

And occasionally, complete idiots who said yes to frost giants and fae courts and arctic demons because it seemed like the right thing to do.

The Arctic-Bunny sat in the warehouse, his pink-white-and-blue hull gleaming under work lights, ready for adventure.

The Glitch Witches were already in Antarctica, monitoring the anomaly, waiting.

Kira was in the Arctic waters, holding back ice demons alone, hoping reinforcements would arrive.

Prince Silvius was in Iceland, planning something that was definitely going to be complicated.

And Dr. Xenon's mysterious patron was watching it all, pieces moving across a board only they could see.

The stage was set.

The cold was coming.

And AETHER was ready.

Probably.
